Social work

Ali, Stephen and Sybil

Social workers work with adults, children and families. They often focus on a specific field of work.

Sybil and Stephen are both social workers in Perth and Kinross Council. Sybil works with people involved in the justice system and Stephen has completed a post graduate qualification to undertake the role of a mental health officer. Ali is currently a part time social work student and is also employed by Perth and Kinross Council to work with children and families.

Becoming a social worker in Scotland requires you to gain a recognised qualification and become registered with the SSSC.

I was a young carer so missed a lot of school and left at 16 without qualifications. I set up my own business but in my late 30s I injured my back. At that point I thought what am I going to do? I really wanted to do social work and if I had a chance when I was younger that’s what I would’ve done. I first of all did an HNC at college and the following year I applied for a social work degree.
